Field: Undergraduate degrees in STAPS: Science and Techniques of Physical Activity and Sport
Degree: Bachelor’s degree
Title: STAPS: Adapted Physical Activity and Health
Programme: Adapted physical activity and health

Course description

This degree, offering 4 specialisations, meets the criteria of the National Register of Professional Certification (RNCP). Indeed, the course description for the first two years is based on the RNCP file for the DEUG in STAPS. Holders of this degree, as technical activity leaders, ‘safely supervise and teach groups within a facility or independently in the field of physical or sporting activities, at introductory, practice or leisure level, not including at competition level. They form part of a professional team and are able to propose and successfully implement an activity project.’

In the 3rd year, the Adapted Physical Activity and Health programme (APA-S) is based on the corresponding RNCP file. It enables students to specialise, in order to:

• Train professionals able to take part in the design, implementation and assessment of educational, rehabilitation and/or inclusion programmes through adapted physical activity, for people with specific needs (the elderly and people with sensory or motor disorders, intellectual deficiencies or chronic diseases).

• Train students in preventive, follow-up and educational health actions through adapted physical activity for all types of participants, in the health, social, medical and educational sectors.

This undergraduate degree course specialising in Sports Science (STAPS) is organised as follows:

A 1st year (L1) common to all four specialisations Adapted Physical Activity and Health (APA-S), Education and Motricity (EM), Sport Training (ES) and Sport Management (MS): students take all teaching units for semesters 1 and 2, i.e. 60 ECTS ; the 1st year constitutes the STAPS FOUNDATION COURSE;

A 2nd year (L2) worth 60 ECTS including 51 shared ECTS (i.e. 85%) organised as follows: 10 common teaching units and 3 optional teaching units, specific to each specialisation (the choice of optional teaching units in semesters 3 and 4 does not restrict the student in their choices for the 3rd year).

A 3rd year (L3) of specialisation, very specific to the adapted physical activity and health sector, focusing in particular on mental disability, chronic diseases, motor disorders and ageing.

Skills acquired on this course

Graduates of the undergraduate degree in APAS master the general skills acquired on the DEUG STAPS course:

• They can integrate various APAS professional environments (particularly in the social, medical and healthcare contexts), understand the issues facing each and contribute to the overall project of the corresponding structures.
• They are able to design, organise, lead, implement and assess action programmes using a range of physical and sporting activities, for groups of participants with specific needs.
• They are able to run sessions for groups of participants with specific needs to help them progress and achieve the greatest possible degree of autonomy.

Further study and career opportunities

One year after graduating with a degree in Sports Science, surveys among 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 graduates show that:
• 13% of graduates, on average, are employed directly upon graduating (16.7% for the APA-S programme);
• Approximately 66% pursue further study on the various Masters in Sports Science offered at Lyon 1;
• Only 11% leave Lyon 1 to pursue further studies in another institution.

In the 2016-2020 educational contract, APA-S graduates can continue their studies at Lyon 1 according to a selective application process (see Decree no. 2017-83 of 25 January 2017) for:
- primarily, the Master in Adapted Physical Activity and Health
but also, on other Sports Science master courses: Training and Optimisation of Sporting Performance; Teaching, Education and Training Professions; and Gender Studies.

Specific characteristics and admission requirements:

The ‘APA-S’ programme commences in part in semester 4 of the 3-year undergraduate degree.
In order to succeed in semester 5 (S5) and semester 6 (S6), students are recommended to have acquired:

• practical and technological skills in at least 4 Adapted Physical and Sporting Activities,
• theoretical knowledge in the various compulsory disciplinary fields

Enrolment procedure:

The application and enrolment procedure is available directly on the website of UFR STAPS Lyon 1, by clicking here.

Assessment:

The degree is obtained after validating each of the 3 years with an average grade.
